Summer Clerkship Program Print E-mail

The Summer Clerkship Program is designed to provide second year law students with exposure to the full range of our practice.  We usually have three Clerks from the day after Memorial Day to mid-August.  In recent years, our Clerks have come from local schools including Rutgers, Seton Hall, Fordham, Cardozo and New York Law School.  Many of our lawyers have participated in the Summer Clerkship Program, which has been an important aspect of firm tradition for decades.

The Summer Clerkship Program integrates the Clerks into the fabric of Firm life.  They participate in nearly every function of our practice, from initial client interview through succeeding phases of the client’s matter to final resolution.  The Clerks prepare for and attend depositions, draft interrogatories careers.jpgand discovery demands.  They also prepare and/or respond to motions.  They attend trials, sit at the counsel table, and assist in the preparation of trial briefs, supplemental memoranda and requests to charge to the jury.

A unique aspect of the Summer Clerkship Program is the position of “Clerk of the Clerks.”  This is a rotating position filled by each of the law clerks.  All assignments for the clerks are directed to the Clerk of the Clerks who is responsible for distributing the work among them.  This system helps ensure even distribution of work and diversity of assignments.

We endeavor to instill a high degree of professionalism and self-confidence in our Clerks.  To this end, we encourage direct interaction with our clients.  The Clerks also participate in weekly Firm meetings, where they are asked to report on a significant legal topic, such as a recent judicial opinion or a change in the Rules of Evidence or Procedure.

Opportunities to socialize informally with our attorneys round out the summer experience.  Activities include softball games with teams from neighboring law firms, county court houses,  firm outings, luncheons and get-togethers.

We are particularly proud of the extraordinarily high pass rate, 98%, which our law clerks have achieved on the New Jersey Bar Examination.
