How long does an appeal take?

  • Appeals can take a long time.
  • The appellate process requires the parties to gather all of the trial materials, write briefs, and oppose the other party’s briefs as well.
  • At the state court level in New Jersey, an appeal can often last two years.
  • Appeals can last even longer if an additional appeal is made to the Supreme Court.
  • In the federal court system, appeals can take more than a year.
