National Senior Fraud Awareness Day: The Growing Threat of Financial and Wire Fraud

Each year on May 15, National Senior Fraud Awareness Day highlights the increasing number of scams targeting older adults and vulnerable individuals. While many people think of phone or email scams, today’s fraudsters are also targeting real estate transactions through sophisticated wire fraud schemes.

The reality is simple: financial fraud can happen to anyone.

At our firm, we represented a client (after her real estate transaction) who became the victim of a wire fraud scam while purchasing her first home. She was highly educated, professionally successful, financially independent, and cautious — yet she was still deceived by scammers who infiltrated the closing process.

Like many victims, she received what appeared to be legitimate wiring instructions related to her real estate transaction. Believing the communication was authentic, she transferred her funds, only to later discover the money had been diverted to fraudsters.

The experience was devastating. What should have been an exciting milestone became emotionally and financially traumatic, severely impacting her confidence and sense of security.

Fortunately, through prompt legal action and aggressive advocacy, we were able to help recover the majority of her losses through settlement and assist her in moving forward with confidence.

Why Real Estate Wire Fraud Is So Dangerous

Wire fraud schemes frequently target real estate transactions because they involve large sums of money, tight deadlines, and multiple parties communicating electronically, including lenders, title companies, attorneys, and realtors.

Scammers may spoof email addresses, compromise email chains, or send fraudulent wiring instructions that appear legitimate — often just before closing.

Importantly, these scams do not only target the elderly or uninformed. Professionals, business owners, and financially sophisticated individuals are victimized every day.

How to Protect Yourself

To reduce the risk of wire fraud:

  • Always verify wiring instructions by telephone using a trusted number obtained independently.
  • Be cautious of last-minute changes to payment instructions.
  • Never rely solely on email communications for wire transfers.
  • Carefully confirm all account and routing information before sending funds.
  • Act immediately if you suspect fraud by contacting your bank, law enforcement, and legal counsel.

Legal Guidance Can Help

Victims of fraud often feel embarrassed, but modern scams are specifically designed to deceive intelligent and careful individuals. In many cases, prompt legal action can help preserve evidence, coordinate with financial institutions, and pursue recovery options.
