Rights That Can Be Signed Away

It’s important for workers to understand their rights. Documents usually signed when you start a job, but sometimes later, can significantly affect those rights.  Some examples of the kinds of rights that can be “signed away” include the following:

  • The right to sue in court
  • The right to be part of a class or collective action
  • The right to work for a competitor

Not everyone has the power to negotiate terms like this. Sometimes, you just need the job and will sign whatever you need to sign to get it. But you should always request a copy of everything you sign so that, if there is a dispute later, you (and your lawyer) will know what the documents say.
