Who should consider settling the issue of divorce through mediation?

On behalf of Cohn Lifland Pearlman Herrmann & Knopf LLP | Apr 24, 2017 |

When many people think of divorce, they think of lengthy, expensive, and hostile battles in a courtroom. Divorce is very rarely associated with anything positive, but it doesn’t always have to be that way. One method of alternative dispute resolution that is commonly used to settle all the issues is known as mediation. Mediation has a lot of benefits, including being cost effective, efficient and relatively peaceful. The couple may walk away with more closure and even a respectful relationship. The strong emphasis on communication in mediation has the potential to resolve hostile feelings and establish a functioning relationship for future parenting.

Mediation may not work for everybody. Some couples can’t sit in the same room, let alone work together, to make difficult decisions regarding their future. A couple has to be willing and ready to communicate effectively with one another in order to successfully settle their matter through mediation. Both parties will have to put aside their differences and understand that settlement isn’t going to happen without compromise.

Mediation can allow you to take control of your future and work towards a peaceful resolution. If you and your spouse are considering a mediated settlement, you need to take a serious look at whether this option is right for you. If you are interested in mediation, contact Cohn Lifland for a consultation.
