Birth Injuries in New Jersey

The impending birth of a new baby is usually a very exciting time for a family. Parents often assume that the utmost safety measures and precautions will be taken by doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff during labor and delivery. However, complications can and sometimes do arise leading to birth injuries as a result.

If a baby is born with physical or neurological injuries, there is a possibility that there was negligence on behalf of a medical professional leading up to or during the birth. For example, an expectant mother’s obstetrician should track a baby’s positioning within the womb. If the baby is in a “breech” position or is unlikely to make safe passage through the birth canal for some other reason during labor, an obstetrician may offer alternate choices, including a caesarean section. In another example, sometimes the use of tools during labor, including forceps or a vacuum extractor, may be necessary to help in safe delivery. However, if these tools are used incorrectly, it may cause serious injury to the baby.

Some examples of birth injuries can include Erb’s palsy, brachial plexus injuries, cerebral palsy, and other injuries as a result of fetal distress. If you believe your child has suffered a birth injury in New Jersey, contact an attorney at Cohn Lifland today for a consultation.
