When a company employs you, you expect them to pay you a fair wage for the work that you do. You also expect your wage to be equal to your coworkers with the same amount of experience who do a similar job.

Indeed, two female public employees in New Jersey have filed lawsuits against Essex County officials related to pay disparity and discrimination.
City paid male employees more
The two lawsuits come from separate women working as clerks in Verona. One of the women works for the city and the other for the municipal court. Their lawsuits claim that male employees of the city make far more money than female employees. The lawsuits point to an all-male city council making salary decisions that heavily favor male employees.
One of the women also claims to have faced retaliation after she complained about the pay disparity. She claims her male supervisor threatened her and harassed her in front of members of the public.
Laws protect pay discrimination
New Jersey employers must follow laws related to equal employment. Not only does the federal government enforce such laws, but New Jersey has its own laws against discrimination in the workplace. These laws have protected classes, including gender, that employers cannot discriminate against.
If the lawsuits prove that the Verona city council favored one gender over another in wages, then they prove that the council engaged in illegal discriminatory practices.
