Virginia Man charged with illegally selling prescription medication to juveniles in New Jersey

Federal law enforcement authorities in New Jersey are taking part in a multistate task force investigating allegations of a man they suspect was illegally dispensing prescription drugs.

As a result, Elliot Atwell, a 30-year-old man from Charlottesville, Virginia, has been taken into custody on federal charges.

The man is alleged to have sent male enhancement pills to at least one teenager living in New Jersey. He has been charged with two counts of dispensing drugs without a prescription. These felony charges that could result in a year behind bars and a $1,000 fine on each count.

Prosecutors said Mr. Atwell built relationships, both virtual and in person, with juveniles who were interested in obtaining the drug for their recreational use. In December 2018, the 16-year-old received a package in the mail containing the drug. When his mother found it, she contacted the police to inform them of the drugs her son received via the U.S. mail. The package had a warning on it to keep the contents away from children and to be used only by medical professionals.

The case remains under investigation by law enforcement agencies in both New Jersey and Virginia, with the FBI now involved.

All prescription drugs can be dangerous if not properly prescribed by a doctor trained to evaluate a patient’s risks. Physicians then monitor the efficacy of the medication and how it works in conjunction with other prescribed drugs. Prescriptions, by law, are to be dispensed only by a licensed pharmacist.
